Deborah Mark, one of Celebrate Holliston’s quiet contributors

By Theresa Knapp
Deborah Mark grew up in Holliston, married her high school sweetheart (John), raised their two children (Bryan and Jackie), and now looks forward to retiring here. Holliston is home.
For more than 30 years, this career graphic designer has been behind the creative “Celebrate Holliston” logos, starting with the original logo in 1991 through this year when she has designed the logos that have appeared throughout the many 300th Celebration events.

“My way of contributing and giving a little bit back for the 300th has been in designing the primary ‘Holliston 300 Celebration’ logo.,” says Mark. “Then, when the calendar of events started to come together, I tried to incorporate something from each event into a 300 logo specifically for them. The goal was to unify the many fun community events under the umbrella of the 300th anniversary year. I really enjoyed trying to give each event its due and making each one unique.”
Mission accomplished.

The primary logo Mark highlights is a colorful word collage calling out Holliston’s many neighborhoods and longtime organizations that have contributed to the fabric of the town.
“I wanted to do something special to celebrate Holliston’s 300th Anniversary,” said Mark. “It took a bit of doing to work as many as possible into the 300 logo. It’s my way of honoring the long history of community spirit and volunteerism that we are fortunate to enjoy here in Holliston.”
She also incorporated strawberries for the strawberry festival, a baseball for the vintage baseball game, a film reel for family movie night, a marching band for the field day (the original design), a trolley for the upcoming holiday stroll, and many more.
Reflecting on the year of celebration, Mark says the committee has done amazing work, and she says there are many ways for people to volunteer within the community.
“I would encourage everyone to volunteer even a small amount of your time,” said Mark. “There are many great organizations in town that could use you, Celebrate Holliston included. You never know how your talents can be put to good use.”
